LOSS OF LIFETIME DETACHMENT MEMBER (JOINED 5 JAN 2007) JOE VENO

Joseph S. Veno (Joe), 90 years old, of York, Maine, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Joe loved his family, friends, neighbors, and all those he met over the years. He was married to his lovely wife Shirley for 61 years before her passing in 2021. He is survived by his children, son Henry Veno of York, ME, his daughter Karyn Palmer (John Palmer) of York, ME, and his son Keith Veno (Tom Hafner) of York, ME. He is predeceased in death by his daughter, Sharyn Veno. He will be missed dearly by his grandchildren whom he adored, Bryan and Kevin Veno, Colin and Erin Palmer, Melissa Biondo, and his great-granddaughter Kelise Biondo. Joe leaves behind his dear sister, Ethel Kelly (101 years old) of Watertown, MA and will be reunited with his late siblings Robert Veno and Marilyn (Veno) Walsh. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and in-laws whom he cherished.

Growing up in Waltham, MA, Joe was the son of Henry and Marion Veno. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School Class of 1953 and voted Most Popular and co-captain of the football team, along with many other activities. After high school, Joe joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. Joe worked for the New England Telephone Company for over 40 years. He loved his hometown and his time with the phone company and developed many lifelong friendships.

Eventually, Joe retired to his happy place here in York. It was here that he found his true passion which was volunteering and caring for others. He loved his community and was deeply involved in St. Christopher Church, York Food Pantry (YCSA), York Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, and Toys for Tots, to name a few. He loved people and always enjoyed having company right up until the very end. He was fortunate to be surrounded by so many wonderful friends in his life.

Joe was a devoted husband, a loving father, a wonderful “Pops”, and a beloved friend to all that knew him. He will be forever loved and missed.

The family would like to thank their private caregivers, Beacon Hospice, Veterans Affairs and all their family and friends for the wonderful care and loving support.

Funeral and memorial services have already taken place.  The Detachment was not called on to perform any duties associated with the passing of Marine Veno.
